Going to court

As with victims of crime, witnesses also have certain rights that they are entitled to.

The Witness Charter has been developed to tell you how, as a witness, you can expect to be treated by the police and others involved in the investigation. It also sets out what help and support you can expect you to receive at every stage of the process.

There are some key standards of care, such as:

  • Being treated with dignity and respect at all times
  • Having a main point of contact to keep you informed of the progress of the case
  • Receiving special measures if you are considered to be a vulnerable or intimidated witness

More information can be found on the Ministry of Justice website.
